Fan Film Podcast Episode 69

"Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? Adrien Van Viersen knows."
Adrien of SmashMedia Productions is our guest on this new edition of the Fan Film Podcast. He's storyboarded a lot of the high end Hollywood Superhero films that have come out in recent years including both Fantastic Four films and X-Men 2 & 3 as well as a long list of credits in between. And he's also made a fan film based one of his favorite long time pulp characters - The Shadow.
What separates Adrien's fan film from most is the dark tone it takes and it's very adult nature of the imagery. The films antagonist is a child rapist and his just rewards appropriate. Not one for the kiddies.
Remember when digital effects started to take over practical effects in the films of the 90s? Sure, in some cases practical effects still do exist in today's cinema, but nothing compared to yesteryear. What the hell was a CGI in the 80s? Today everyone, with exception of my mother, knows exactly what CGI is and the role it plays in the movies we see. The same is happening behind the scenes with the storyboard. Adrien will clue us in on the new technologies and perhaps the death of the storyboard artist.

Fanboy Will and I haven't done a one of one, give and take since the beginning of the Fan Film Podcast. We've normally always had a guest or guests on tap. We decided to put the spotlight of the show on ourselves this time out discussing current goings ons in the world of the funny books and the movies based on them as well as any other insignificant pieces of information that interests us.
I hope you can humor us for this episode of the FFP. Hopefully we won't bore you all too much. And I promise next episode we'll have an ubber awesome guest lined up!
Things we touch on:
Upcoming films; Green Lantern, Captain America, and Thor.
The lack of updates for Fanboy Will's Fanboy Theatre.
Why I stopped writing for the Comic Book Bin and started Fan Film Follies. Here are links to two articles I touch upon in my explanation for context sakes.

We address Chris .R. Notarile and his forum comments posted at the Batman Fan Films site towards Aaron Schoenke's Batman fan film City of Scars.
Here are a couple links to do your homework while listening.

I don't normally pimp my own projects on the Podcast, BUT in this case I'll direct you to our Making Comics Studios site. The concept GEMS is mentioned during the podcast.
The upcoming guest star appearances for the last season of Smallville.

Batman XXX.
And other tangents of wonderful geekness.

Y: The Last Man is a comic book series by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra published by Vertigo beginning in 2002. The series is about the only man to survive the apparent simultaneous death of every male mammal (barring the same man's pet monkey) on Earth. The series was published in sixty issues by Vertigo and collected in a series of ten paperback volumes. Our guests for this episode of Fan Film Podcast are taking the comic's source material (Minus the monkey) making it into a thirty minute short film.
Writer/director Ryan O'Leary and actor James Kuck join us this time out to give us a rundown on their new film. Make sure you check out the film's FaceBook page.

In the past year there has been a huge leap in the quality of fan films. As a fan film "reporter" I call these films achievements or a better term could be landmarks. I would point you to The Hunt For Gollum, Born of Hope, City of Scars, Makazie One, and a couple that are probably slipping my memory. Each of these films listed have brought a legitimacy to a genre that myself and Fanboy Will hold dear. This holds true for our guest this time out on the FFP, Mr. Eddie Lebron who brings us his vision of the Nintendo Campcon character, MegaMan. Remember the days when fan films were about eight or ten minutes? Eddie has created a 94-minute feature film. Now why is this a landmark? There have been fan films of that length before. None have had the quality of writing, acting, sound design, special effects, and just overall fun factor meaning I wasn't watching the clock to see when this thing was finally going to end. MegaMan does what any film should do - it sucks you into the story from beginning to end.
I'd also like to comment on the lack of Fan Film Podcasts we've had this year. The biggest answer is time and the lesser answer is more technical. The technical issue has been addressed. The time issue is another matter. Both Fanboy Will and myself have been working in other aspects of our lives that limit fan film coverage. It's my intension to get us back on track to at least 2 shows monthly starting in July. We have some great people to talk with already lined up. Thank you for the support thus far.

WOW! It's been a few weeks since our last Fan Film Podcast. The reason for our absence? Just not enough hours in the day to do everything that needs to be done. Is that a good excuse? Probably not, but it’s the only one I’ve got for you. We'll make it up to you by having more quality CASTS throughout the summer. Fanboy Will and I already have some great people lined up.
So let’s start back with our 21-year-old writer/director guest Dan Marcus who has created his own short superhero film called "Fallen". If you watch the trailer you’ll find the production more grounded in the same vein as Heroes. You know. No tights. Just powers! Now you have to hate Dan because at such a young age he already has the tools to make quality productions at minimal cost. To what I’ve seen of The Fallen so far it equals a lot of what I see in the movies or on television and in some cases exceeds. I can’t imagine what he'll be doing in five or ten years from now, but I know it is going to be crazy awesome.

What is a Fan Film?
A fan film is a film or video inspired by a film, television program, comic book or a similar source, created by fans rather than by the source's copyright holders or creators.

What is the FFP?
The Podcast is the opportunity to spotlight Fan Films in a whole new medium. Fanboy Will and Christopher Moshier join forces to bring the creators of these great works to your ear.
